More International Expansion?
It may not work out that way, but the betting is it will.
If this is the way things play out, I bet there will be a lot of disappointed fans. I'm all for NASCAR trying to expand, but at what expense? This surely won't help any of the teams save any money, heck, some probably can't afford to go. And I'm definitely not a fan of adding more road courses.
It all boils down to one thing, NASCAR thinking more of the almighty dollar instead of the fans. Oh sure, they'll say they're trying to expand the sport and fan base, but the only thing they will be expanding is their pockets.
I'm hoping these sources are wrong and this is not the direction NASCAR is taking.

» Updating NASCAR "Outsourcing" from Full Throttle
Kathy of Kathy's PitStop fame, has posted a link to a Winston-Salem Journal article that quotes "NASCAR sources," on plans to further expand the organization's North American footprint:NASCAR execs are justifiably ecstatic over this sport's Mexico... [Read More]

being a NASCAR fan doesnt make you a redneck, being a redneck makes you a redneck.
i love NASCAR, but im not naive enough to think a series growing like this can stay in the 1 country forever.

Well said Sara, just because we are NASCAR fans doesn't make us all rednecks. But if it makes you feel more intelligent to call all NASCAR fans rednecks that your choice.

Exactly Sara!

Matt,
Why are we rednecks? Because we take exception to the sport we love being dismantled, and knowing we can't do anything to stop it? Imagine if the NFL announced that they were moving the Green Bay Packers franchise to, say, Mexico City to catch that hip Hispanic market. Imagine how betrayed the Green Bay fans would feel - this team that they nurtured, that they stuck with, the stadium that they shovelled every time it snowed, and now it's all gone. I'll give you a hint: they'd feel like a lot of Nascar fans, especially in the southeast. That doesn't make us "rednecks." No real fan has a problem with a needed change for the better, like improved safety standards. It's putting a quick buck above long-term fan loyalty that gets to us, that's all.

if NASCAR is running at these tracks where they can get a truckload of cash its making the teams money.
running tracks where nobody turns up does not make money.
road courses boring?
oh yeah....because 4 hours at michigan, cali, dega, tona is really entertaining.
most of the ovals NASCAR is running at the moment are borefests, apart from the short tracks.
cant wait till NASCAR has its first non american champion, you rednecks will go mental.

Leave Nascar the way it is or otherwise risk losing a lot of fans. That is why there is CART and Grand Am. Let them run the international scene.

The only thing that bothers me about Pocono is that Bill France Jr had an agreement with the Mattioli's that if they modernized, there would be two cup dates. Pocono was modernized, and that promise has been kept, 'til now anyway.
I would like to see Pocono keep the two, but spread it out a little farther. The difficulty I see is that it is one of the last independently owned tracks, and that verbal promise may not carry weight with Brian France. Too bad, because fans in the area are enthusiastic, to say the least.
As for going to Canada and Mexico, I see it as inevitable for Cup.
I sure hope NASCAR remembers what really killed CART, because I do see some of the same mistakes being made.

Marc,
I just read the article yesterday and commented on it. I remember reading about the office in Canada, but forgot about it. Obviously they are moving forward on this, although the article doesn't cite any specific sources, it looks like there may be some more changes to the schedule for next year.
My biggest worry is the cost to the teams, especially the smaller teams, will they be able to afford to go? Also, I wish they were not road courses, I know some enjoy them, but those are one thing I could do without, but that's just my opinion.

Marc,
It maybe old news to you, but Kathy was commenting on the new story she read. Just because you seem to agree with NASCAR's expansion plans she doesn't and that is why she posted this entry.
Brian France needs to quit this idea that NASCAR needs to expand and move away from its roots. They really don't need to get rid of good rid of good race dates and race at these ridiculous road courses (extremely boring) just to make some money.
According to France they changed the qualifying system to save the teams money, but how exactly are they saving the teams money if they force them to go through the extra expense of going down to Mexico and up into Canada.

You have updated what is old news Kathy. NASCAR opened a business office in Toronto last June.
At the time I predicted it would be 2 years and a Truck or Busch series race would be held in the "Great White North."
It seems I was a little long on my timeline.
Calm down "your Honor," as one who grew up in Detroit and spent much time in Canada I can assure you the weather in Montreal or Toronto is no different than Southeastern Michigan, upstate New York, or Maine from June til early October.

yeah and have you heard about the talk of trying to get a race in Canada? CANADA?!?!? there's a what, 2 week window in which they can have suitable weather to race?
this is getting out of hand.
